Grant
Maizels and Carmen Penny Move on New Zealand Lights
Last month I reported
on my visit to New Zealand and the urgent need for their lights and preservation
needs to be taken up on the Internet. Grant Maizels has spent some
more time in New Zealand in October and with the help of photographer
Carmen Penny has put up pages for Bean Rock, Cape Brett, Kaipara North Head,
Manakau South Head,
and Rangitoto.
Rangitoto was the
one near Auckland that I couldn't identify when I was there.

Photos
of Manakau South Head, New Zealand
Manakau South Head
lighthouse is located geographically near Auckland, but about 100km by
road. The lighthouse was demolished some years ago when it was predicted
that it would collapse due to erosion of the cliff on which the light
was constructed. The remains above were all that I could find when I visited
the site in August 1998.
Please contact me if you have further details. I would particularly like
photographs of the lighthouse prior to demolition

Requests for Lighthouse Plans
I am thinking of
constructing a lighthouse as a building project. Do you know
of any Web sites (addresses) whereas, I can order plans to do the construction?
Thanks

I am in the process
of building my own lighthouse on Seneca Lake (NY). I am only just
begun to research lighthouses and was wondering if you had any sites where
I could see actual plans for a lighthouse?

NB: Someone ought
to do a page on this. I get at least one request a month for this
type of thing.

Help
Maintain Deal Island in Bass Strait
The Marine &
Coastal Community Network was instrumental in obtaining a grant for the
National Estate for essential maintenance of the Superintendents Residence
on Deal Island. This building is one of the most significant in
relation to the light station complex. The island was recently transferred
to State Government from the Commonwealth. Deal Island is part of
Kent Group of Islands. The Network is looking for skilled
volunteers to help with maintenance of the Superintendents Residence for
a planned visit in April, 1999.
If you are interested in being involved contact Christian Bell on (03)

Volunteers
as Caretakers for Deal Island
The Australian Bush
Heritage Fund has been granted an interim lease of Deal Island while the
long term arrangements for management of the island is being sorted out.
They have established a roster for volunteers as caretakers.
Should you be interested in being a volunteer caretaker their phone number
is (03) 62232670 [Email

Keep
the Light Burning on Maatsuyker
Tasmanian Conservation

from private individuals and groups to help "keep the light burning"
on Maatsuyker. Anyone
interested in getting involved in the preservation of the island can call

Unfortunately there
was an error in her contact details, so here they are corrected below.
If anyone has any
information Averil can contacted either be e-mail [Email

Refurbished
Lighthouse a Reminder of a Brighter Past
[By Tom
Crystal, Newcastle Herald, Saturday October 10 1998]
IN an are of high
technology satellite ship positioning, the humble lighthouse continues
to elude extinction.
Although replaced by modern navigation systems the towers have survived
largely as tourist attractions.
To that end 136 year old light at Point Stephens
has been refurbished to ensure it functions for many more years.
After recently claiming ownership over the structure overlooking Fingal
Bay, the National Parks and Wildlife Service spent $85,000 on it's restoration.
The lighthouse was unveiled this week complete with a special waterproof
membrane system guaranteed for a decade.

It's sandstone walls
have been cleaned, the cast steel stair case refitted and the lantern
room resealed for waterproofing.
A Tomaree National Park ranger, Mr George Malolakis said the lighthouse
might be used in cultural tourism.
Although solar energy has replaced fossil fuels in powering the lamp,
little else has changed in the building dating back to the convict are.
A conservation management plan is being prepared for the area.
Mr Malolakis said some boats still used the lighthouse as a navigation
aid.
About $500,000 may be needed to restore three lighthouse keepers' cottages
destroyed by fire in 1991.

The Network organised
a field trip in May 1998 to the Kent Group, the site of a proposed marine
reserve. The sail training vessel "Windeward Bound" was charted
and politicians and stakeholder groups were invited. The majority of participants
were divers. Video footage of the voyage was shot and used as a feature
item on a subsequent ABC Stateline story during Ocean Week. Articles appeared
in "Aussie Post" and one is also due to appear in the December's
"Australian Geo" and "Forty Degrees South". While
in the Kent Group a botanist on the voyage added 12 species of plants
to the botanical list for Kent Group. A small party also eliminated a
colonising outbreak of Sea Spurge from Winter Cove on Deal Island.
The Australian Bush Heritage Fund has been granted an interim lease of
Deal Island while the long term arrangements for management of the island
is being sorted out.
Efforts
to keep Maatsuyker Manned

the Elements

At the eleventh hour,
through the lobbying efforts of the Maatsuyker Committee,
of the Tasmanian Conservation Trust, an agreement has been reached between
the state and federal governments that will provide $240,000 from AMSA
to establish a viable energy alternative to the diesel generators that
have been in use, and to reconstruct the old haulage way that was used
to get supplies up the hill.

The Tasmanian Government
now has a formal responsibility to care for the island, it's natural and
cultural heritage.
Volunteers for conservation work and weather watching will be able to
stay in the old keepers residences without relying on the expensive upkeep
of the diesel generators. In short, this means that the island will remained
occupied.
