Cape Otway 150th Anniversary Program

The Cape Otway Lighthouse, established in 1848, celebrates its 150th anniversary in August 1998. Celebrations are planned and this will include music, performance and most of all turning the old light back on.

  

Program

The celebrations are being held in conjunction with the Olympics Arts Festival: "Sea Change". They will be held on Saturday 29th August, the exact anniversary of the establishment of the light 150 years ago.

Date: Saturday 29 August 1998
Time: Gates open from 9:30a.m.
Entry: Special 2 for 1 admission applies all day.
Catering Food & beverages will be available throughout the day

9.30 am Ongoing Activities
Lightkeepers Residences open of inspection
1848 Lighthouse Tower open (entry by donation to FOCOS)
Displays of photographs and memorabilia related to the history of the lighthouse and lightstation will be in the historic buildings
1.30 - 3.30 pm Theatre by Chance ... now you see them now you don’t
Roving performances at various locations within the grounds
  1. May the Children Rest in Peace
    Apollo Bay and Mangala dancers perform a dance to preserve the peace of this romantic dale. (Cemetery)
  2. The Ford Family
    A tableau of the Ford family and a sound track of Ford’s earliest reports (Cottages)
  3. Land
    A comic dramatisation of the contest for land (La Mama)
  4. Hitch-Hiker
    Mic Smith’s acclaimed monologue developed from stories of Banjo Clarke. (La Mama)
  5. Gates of Hell
    Maps, charts, photos and sound track detailing the establishment of Cape Otway Lighthouse. (Cottages)
  6. Bush Tucker
    The Wathaurong people provide a sample of local bush tucker.
  7. Mr Harradine Learns to Dance
    Deen Maar dancers demonstrate their dance steps.
  8. Hope on a Rope
    Shipwreck survivor hauled to safety (La Mama - behind light)
  9. Glow in the Dark
    Trevor Walker presents a treat for the kids with balloons and things that glow in the dark. (Everywhere)
  10. The Light that Sings
    Judy Jacques sings with the children... and those who are kids at heart.
  11. The Whale
    Mari Loury’s acclaimed puppet performance. (Old Workshop)
  12. Hung for a Sheep
    You won’t believe the tricks of these sheep and dogs. Not to be tried at home! (Assistant Keeper’s yard)

6.00 pm Turn on the Light
... a performance on the Sea Change stage beside the Lighthouse compeered by Donald Walker.
  1. Beacons of Hope
    Apollo Bay and Mangala dancers present a celebration of the sea and those who sail upon her.
  2. Je Be Weng
    Wathaurong dancers perform a traditional dance.
  3. Tall Ships
    The Ronah-H, the last sailing vessel to trade in Bass Strait sails past with a fleet of smaller craft.
  4. Cries of the Wind
    sung by Mari Loury.
  5. Howlin’ Wind and Glen Romanis
    perform tracks from Howlin’ Wind’s latest CD.
  6. Gungitjmara Dances
    brought you by Deen Maar.
  7. Shane Howard
    sings songs from his new CD "Clan".
  8. Donald Walker
    presents excerpts from Cape Otway history.
  9. Judy Jacques and Lighthouse Band
    sing from their new CD "Going for a Song".
  10. Turning on the Light
    Bill Bowker introduces the Hon. Stewart McArthur MP, Member for Corangamite and the Hon. Marie Tehan, Minister for Conservation and Land Management in the Victorian State Government. The Hon. Marie Tehan MP will turn on the old light at sunset.
  11. Flares are fired to signal the celebratory return of the old light and the close of the ceremony.
7.30 - 10.00pm Jazz Social
... with Gary Richardson's Colac Jazz Group. During this time night tours of the floodlit tower will be available.

Significance

The Cape Otway Lighthouse was the oldest operational lighthouse with unbroken service on the mainland Australian coast until it was decommissioned in January 1994.
