Hi! Welcome to church this morning, especially if you’re new or visiting with us.

Today's sermon is on:
This is the second week in our Summer Series. We are looking at the question: Why doesn't God end suffering now?

Announcements:

Church over January
- Church this Sunday (and for the rest of January) will be outdoors under the COLA. This will help reduce the covid risk.
- masks outdoors are optional, but we encourage you to consider it
- we will aim to have more than enough chairs for easy social distancing
- we will also be doing our best to provide a zoom stream for those who need to stay home. Please be aware that we have had real trouble with the internet connection lately, and the zoom feed could be unreliable
- please pray for good weather

Summer Series
Our Summer Series, continuing this week.

Building pledges
Last week we announced the amazing news that together as a church we have pledges $151,000 each year for the next 3 years. Praise God! If you haven't yet pledged but would still like to, please email Kevin McKay our treasurer.

Men's Camp at Tahlee
Tahlee Men's Camp is on the 18th-20th February - just 7 weekends away!
*Alex Lopez will be preaching on Proverbs
*Primary-school aged kids welcome to come along
*Cabin and tent options
*Rego is open now - click here.
Don't miss out on a highlight of the year for the guys in our church!

Women's Retreat
Save the date for our women's retreat at Tahlee on the 11th-13th of March.

Pray for a tenant
Please pray for a tenant to come forward to lease our land ASAP. At this stage it looks like other options have dried up. A tenant on the land will help us to cover expenses and save for a building of our own.

Michael on annual leave
Michael will be on annual leave from the 17th-30th of January.

National Church Life Survey
On February 13th, we will be participating in the National Church Life Survey. The purpose of this survey is to assess and reflect on our church's strengths and plan for the future. Your responses are a valuable part of this process of growing the health and vitality of our church.
This survey attempts to include all churches of all denominations in Australia. Like the national census, it includes lots of questions about you personally but it is TOTALLY anonymous. No one in our church, including the pastors, will know what you put on your survey, and no one at the NCLS centre will be able to identify you from your data.

All people attending Lighthouse Church aged 15 + will be asked to fill in the “Attenders” survey. Those aged 8-14 will be asked to fill in a “Children’s” Survey. It will take about 20 minutes and we will fill it in during church time on Sunday February 13th and give it to Mick Shallvey at the end of church.

The NCLS questions are shaped by 15 years of research on thousands of Australian churches. The data from our church will be pooled and compared to other similar churches to help our pastors examine our strengths and weaknesses and give guidance on how we can improve. The questions you will be answering will be for you personally. For more information on the survey check out the NCLS website: 2021ncls.org.au or speak to Debbie Lawson-Smith.

Bible Readings:

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.
1The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Romans 5:1-11

Peace and Hope
1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
