Split Point lighthouse at Airey's Inlet could be open to the public very soon. The Surf Coast Shire Council is set to lease the tower from the Victorian State Govt. and sub-lease it to a private operator to run tours, if the community backs the plan. Submissions on the proposal closed in January.
The Dept of Sustainability and Environment has drawn up a draft licence agreement giving Council 75 cents a visitor for maintenance of the lighthouse precinct. The Geelong Independent reported in December that up to 2000 people a week have visited the lighthouse during open periods.
AMSA still operates the lighthouse. The confined space inside the tower will limit tours to no more than ten people at a time. Stay tuned for developments.
