Dear FriendsA new feature of new pages and updated pages is the inclusion of the location of the light. There is map reference, accompanied by a link to the Australian Geographic Place Names (Gazetteer) Site that displays a series of maps to show the location of the light within Australia and within it's locality. Some people found last months bulletin a little top heavy. This was due partly to my inexperience with handling pictures etc., but was made worse by the way some e-mail programs handle HTML (pictures, formatting and links). The newsletter is prepared in FrontPage 98 and tested on Netscape Messenger 4, Outlook Express (IE 4) and Eudora 3. Problems do occur with Eudora and don't seem to be resolved without downgrading the integrity of the Bulletin. With Eudora 3 I recommend you open the Bulletin, Right Click over it, and select "Copy to Browser". Hopefully this month the heavy stuff will stay on the web site but will be loaded and accessable from the bulletin without a copy of these being placed on permanently on your system. Please let me know if there are any problems. Department of Scrounge:If anybody has any of this material on any Australian lighthouses including the ones listed at the Department of Scrounge it would appreciated, especially the high priority ones:

Troubridge Island Survives Yet Another Year's Winter's Gales
This lighthouse is very much under threat. The erosion has now reached the base of the lighthouse and in the winter high seas the foundations are threatened. Chris Johnson, who conducts tours to the light, has informed us that even though the light has survived this year the sea has made such inroads to the foundations that he doubts it will survive next years winter gales. He says that experts have come and looked at it over the years but as yet no clear plan has been resolved on how to deal with this situation. For more information on this lighthouse and it's history see the Troubridge Island Lighthouse page at <http://www.lighthouse.net.au/lights/SA/Troubridge%20Shoal/Troubridge%20Island.htm>. Report International Conference on Lighthouses - Hamburg 9-19 June, 1998 100
most historically important lighthouses throughout the world In
1996 a committee was formed within IALA to examine the preservation of
historic lighthouses. A decision of this committee was to collate
a list of the "100 Most Historically Important Lighthouses Throughout
the World"
Each nomination was to include:
Australia submited only two lighthouses
It was disappointing that AMSA did not look at our lights with a broader perspective. For example the Cape Wickham Lighthouse on King Island is significant not only because of it's history, but the fact it is the tallest lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere. Height had a significant positive weighting in selecting the final 100. Also the cultural
significance played by lights such as Cape Otway, 150
years old this year, in bringing migrants to this country. Regards
until the September 98 Bulletin
