"Lighthouses of Australia: Images from the End of an Era" book reprinted

John Ibbotson has completed a second print run of his magnificent book, Lighthouses of Australia: Images from the End of an Era.

A keen photographer since the late sixties, John set himself the challenge of photographing all Australian lighthouses in 1992, after a number of years living in Alaska, where his wilderness photos were printed in well-recognised publications such as Alaska Magazine, Alaska Geographic, Alaska Outdoors, Adventure Travel and National Geographic books.

It took him seven years to collect the photographs and the information he needed. To complete his collection of photographs, John drove 20,000 km in his 1976 Valiant and photographed lighthouses from Cape York, QLD to Cape Leveque, WA (see the LoA Bulletins November 2000, December 2000 and January 2001). When he could not get to the lighthouse by car or on foot, he hired other kinds of transport to get there, including light planes, helicopters and fishing boats.

All this hard work bore fruit in the form of a 288 page, 305 x 267 mm book, containing 500 colour photographs of over 220 Australian lighthouses.

John's second book, Lighthouses of Australia: A Visitor's Guide, was published in 2003, and is an A5-size (210mm x 160mm), high quality, 264 page, glove box guide to 150 of Australia's 'classic' lighthouses, with 180 colour photos, 8 maps, and information on how to get there, services available, cost and contact info (if applicable) and whether there is accommodation available in the keepers' cottages.

Both books are a must for any lighthouse enthusiast, or anyone interested in Australian maritime history.
