Welcome everyone to the January/February 2006 edition of the Lighthouses of Australia Inc Bulletin

Welcome to 2006 and the first edition of the Bulletin for this year. We mentioned in the last Bulletin some plans in mind for Lighthouses of Australia Inc for this year and beyond, and we already working out ways of bringing them to fruition.

This Bulletin begins with the great story of a trip to South Australia to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the reconstruction of the Cape Jaffa Lighthouse. The trip was full of adventures, photos and great people - and hot weather.

Garry Searle concludes his Cuban Lighthouses documentary, with visits to the Cayo Jutias, Faro Paredon Grande & Faro Rio Santa Ana lighthouses.

We also have a poem about lighthouse keepers - a simple yet effective summary of the purpose of keepers - reminds us why they should have never become an extinct species.

This Bulletin is packed full of news about our lighthouses - it appears lighthouses are featuring in the media more often. Some is good news, like Maatsuyker Island is to be powered by renewable energy, and the government plans to be tougher on lighthouse vandals; some is not so good news, such as the downgrading of the Marino Rocks lighthouse, the uncelebrated 150th birthday of the Troubridge Shoal Lighthouse and the passing of Mike Dalrymple, founder of the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend.

Important notices for readers are the International Lighthouse Conference in Canada in June, and the continuing of the Beacons by the Sea: Lighthouses of Australia exhibition at the Queensland Maritime Museum.

As always, LoA receives lots of letters, which we endeavour to respond to as soon as we can. This edition's letters include a query about the Cape Conran and Little Rame Head Lights; details sought about Arthur Chilcott who drowned at Goose Island; comments on Maatsuyker Island Lighthouse being unmanned and a quirky question: What did a lighthouse "weigher" do?

Enjoy this Bulletin, and I welcome your feedback - send your comments or suggestion to me via feedback@lighthouse.net.au.

We also hope that as ongoing Bulletin subscribers, those of you who are not members will take up the opportunity to join LoA Inc, and assist us the preservation of Australia's lighthouses.

Regards,
