Australia’s 2006 Lighthouses of the 20th Century Stamps

The new Australia Post lighthouse $0.50 stamp issue was launched at the Wollongong Head Lighthouse in New South Wales on 1 May 2006 by a group of fifth grade children from St Francis Xavier Primary School.

After listening to a talk about lighthouses by author John Ibbotson, who also provided 37 of the 40 lighthouse photos used in the issue, the students filled-in maxi-cards and posted them in a special letter box set up for the occasion.

The 5 stamps feature the following 20th century lighthouses: Point Cartwright Mooloolaba Qld 1979, Wollongong Head NSW 1937, Point Lonsdale Vic 1902, Casuarina Point Bunbury WA 1971 and Cape Don on the Cobourg Peninsula NT 1916.

The five lights selected for the series were not only built in the 20th century but are located in five different states. As well as the stamps and maxi-cards, Australia Post also produced a Prestige Booklet that contains five unique blocks of four stamps plus information about each of the lighthouses.
