Lighthouse revamp awaits council green light
ABC News, Friday, 28 July 2006
After five years of planning, the multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Nobby's Lighthouse looks set to get the green light from Newcastle City Council.
A consortium wants to turn three existing cottages at the site into eight accommodation units, with another building transformed into a 50 seat glass-encased restaurant.
Council officers have recommended councillors approve the plan at next week's meeting. The proponent, Neil Slater, says he is confident they will, because it includes a number of measures to protect the site's heritage value.
"We've been working with the Heritage Council of NSW in the development process and, you know, between understanding their needs and probably getting a greater perspective on the heritage values, you know, we've come to that is being the right course that they're happy with, we're happy with, and I think it's a great opportunity now for the councillors to allow access to the site for the people of Newcastle," he said.

Nobby's lighthouse gets green light for redevelopment
ABC News, 2 August 2006
Newcastle's historic Nobby's lighthouse will be redeveloped after the city council backed the $2 million plan at its meeting last night. A consortium wants to convert three existing cottages on the site to eight accommodation units and transform another building into a 50 seat restaurant.
Some councillors criticised the plan for compromising the site's heritage value and there were also concerns about the operating hours of its viewing platform and kiosk.
But Newcastle Lord Mayor John Tate says it is an exciting project for the city.
"I'm relieved that council has given this the green light, this has had extraordinary examination by the heritage office and the heritage council," he said. "I think this is an exceptional development, a unique development and will do a tremendous amount for tourism as far as Newcastle is concerned."
