Progress at Cape Naturaliste, WA
by Jennifer Kaye, LoA member
The team at Cape Naturaliste in Western Australia have been successful in obtaining a $30,000 grant towards development of their Visitor Centre and restoration of two keeper’s cottages.
Further to this, the visitor numbers are on the increase and greater interest in the preservation of an historic landmark seems to be happening. Congratulations to all concerned.
Preservation of the countryside around the light has also been in the news lately. A large housing sub-division at Bunker Bay has been disallowed on environmental grounds. One of the main concerns was the impact of the housing on the view from the lighthouse.
Preservation of this was considered most important as our visual environmental needs must be met. The surrounds of Cape Naturaliste are as integral to the area as the light itself and draw many to this region. Seeing the vastness of our coastline from the balcony of the lighthouse reminds us of the reason for their existence and the history that surrounds us all.
