Orkney lighthouse just misses out on TV millions

Raymond Hainey, The Scotsman A 19th-Century wheelwright and blacksmith's workshop last night won the final of Restoration Village, while a Scottish lighthouse took third place. Chedham's Yard in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, proved to be the most popular property in the BBC2 show, attracting more than half a million votes. Supporters plan to turn the site into a working museum, with a blacksmith to provide training and education. Its victory came as a disappointment for backers of Dennis Head Old Beacon on North Ronaldsay, Orkney. The lighthouse made it into the top three selected by the public from a list of eight finalists, which also included the 16th-century Cromarty East Church on the Black Isle.

Crimea lighthouse row escalates
BBC News
12 September 2006
A Ukrainian court has ruled that the country should take control of 22 lighthouses in Crimea operated by the Russian military. Ukraine says a 1997 deal with Russia on division of the Black Sea Fleet gives it ownership of the lighthouses. Moscow says they have been leased to the Russian navy until 2017.
Arguments about the Soviet-era Black Sea Fleet have soured Russian-Ukrainian relations since the collapse of the USSR in 1991. The Sevastopol appeals court decided on Tuesday to transfer responsibility for the 22 lighthouses from the Russian defence ministry to the Ukrainian transport ministry.

Burnham-On-Sea, Somerset, UK Damage to a power cable on Burnham-On-Sea's famous beach lighthouse has not caused any interruption to its power supply, the town's Harbour Master confirmed on Monday (September 11th). His comments came after the main power cable that provides electricity to the building's vital navigational light was damaged. A large gash appeared in the cable running up one of the building's nine legs, as pictured above. Harbour Master Peter Lee said on Monday it was unclear whether the damage had been inflicted by vandals or just debris during the high tides.

For sale: UK's most romantic B&B (with Dalek)
Sally Williams, Western Mail
19 August 2006
It's dusk and you are making your way up the spiral staircase, past the Dalek, to the top of the West Usk Lighthouse, near Newport in Wales. At the top, from where you are sitting - in a bubbling hot tub, sipping a glass of wine - you can just about make out the lights of the seaside resorts of Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare across the Bristol Channel. From this bird's eye view, you can see headlights approaching. It is a Rolls Royce, coming to pick you up and take you to your chosen restaurant. There are not many properties in Wales where you can do this. So it's no wonder that estate agents were left scratching their heads when West Usk Lighthouse came on to the property market. It is perhaps the most unusual B&B around.
