Nobbys Lighthouse turns 150

At midnight on the 31st December 2007 the 150th birthday for this Newcastle landmark passed with little fanfare. The site is owned by Newcastle Port Corporation and although there was no official opening of the site, a small group of caring citizens did however hold a gathering at the gates to the lighthouse precinct later that day.

The planned development of the headland site continues to be fought out. The Federal Government is reported to be considering rejecting the plan, which has been passed by Newcastle Council.

The opponents to the development, which would see the lighthouse encased within a yet to be built restaurant complex, plan on meeting with Peter Garrett in the coming weeks.

A report of the 150th anniversary and images can be found on the The Parks and Playgrounds Movement Inc. Blogsite. The site also contains news on the fight to save the Lighthouse from the planned development.

The ABC reported on 20 December 2007 ...

Commonwealth accused of ignoring Nobbys lighthouse reports

The Newcastle restaurateur hoping to redevelop Nobbys lighthouse says he is angry the Commonwealth has foreshadowed rejecting the plan, ignoring the extensive reports that have been compiled.

Neil Slater says federal Environment Department staff made their intentions clear when they visited the site last week, but still asked him to compile another two-page brief to state his case.

The development has already been approved by Newcastle council and the New South Wales Government.

Mr Slater says the Commonwealth appears to be making a decision without fully understanding the plans. "We've spent six years of continuous consultation, really working through the project," he said.

"And you get somebody walking in from Canberra who's there two minutes who goes, 'what about, have you ever thought', you know come up with this brain storm, perhaps we can put the restaurant in one of the cottages.

"We're going, 'if you read the documentation, we've had seven different looks at how this proposal works best'."
