Lighthouse Renovations - Kiama, Point Lowly, Hornby, Warden Head

by Ian Clifford

The Kiama work was completed last month and formally accepted by Tony Kelly the NSW Minister for Lands, the custodians of the light and Member for Kiama Matt Brown on the 5th May. (See photo below) Work began on the light in February and involved encasing the structure in scaffolding with protective netting so the old lead based paint could be removed safely. The scaffolding was erected to allow the on going operation of the light throughout the project. Kiama lighthouse remains an operational light.

The interior of the light was also stripped and repainted. Work was undertaken by Paintrite a Dubbo based company after a tender process by the Department of Lands.

Other work involved replacing vandalised glazing and the lantern room door.

A new door was manufactured by the Kiama Council Workshop. This is the first maintenance the lighthouse has received since it's handover from AMSA to the NSW government in 1996.

The Kiama lighthouse is one of the most visited on the NSW coast because of it's accessibility and close proximity to the Kiama tourist attractions including the blowhole.

Funding for the project was obtained by Matt Brown member for Kiama after the poor condition of the lighthouse and it's importance as a tourist focal point was brought to his attention by Lighthouses of Australia.

Point Lowly (SA) Hornby (NSW) and Warden Head (NSW) are also receiving some needed maintenance, and fresh paint. We'll report on these in a future issue.
