International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend (ILLW) 2006

International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend 2006
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 August 2006

Join the fun and help to raise the public profile of our lighthouses. Many lighthouses and places of associated interest will be open to the public, and there will be special events at lighthouses all around the world.

Special events at Australian lighthouses:
Lighthouses of Australia Inc is keen to help promote any activities being organised as part of ILLW. If you are the manager or caretaker at a lighthouse, or an amateur radio group intending to participate in ILLW, and have special activities planned that involve the lighthouse itself, please send us details so that we can promote it here on the Lighthouses of Australia website.
Mike Dalrymple, the founder and organiser of the International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend passed away 21 December 2005. ILLW is continuing in his memory, and in his honour, a minute’s silence will be held at 0001UTC. The event will therefore begin one minute later than usual at 0002UTC. Vale Mike GM4SUC

Over the past eight years, International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend (ILLW) has grown to over 370 lighthouses in some 51 countries around the world participating in the event. The event is always held on the 3rd full weekend in August and it now coincides on the Sunday with International Lighthouse Day.

The lighthouses are "activated" by amateur radio operators, and the basic objective of the event is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation and restoration, to promote amateur radio. Hams set up their gear in or next to a lighthouse / lightship, and make contact with other lighthouses. The public is invited to participate, to learn about radio and the importance of lighthouses and their preservation.
