The Cape Spencer Lighthouse

A 1950s beacon was upgraded in the 1970s, and was replaced with the current concrete structure and lantern.

LOCATION: Latitude 35° 18.2' S; Longitude 136° 52.8' E (Map)
OPERATOR: Australian Maritime Safety Authority
CHARACTER: Group Flash 3 Every 15 Seconds
LIGHT SOURCE: 120v 1000w Tungsten Halogen Lamp
POWER SOURCE: Mains Electricity, Standby Generator
INTENSITY: 25,000 cd
ELEVATION: 78 metres
RANGE: 23 Nautical Miles
HEIGHT: 9 metres

History

A automatic beacon was established on this point in 1950. The beacon resembled a metal box with a river-style light on top.

A major upgrade was undertaken during the 1970s and the current concrete structure and lantern was erected.

The new tower was also seen as the replacement for the lighthouse on nearby Althorpe Island.

 

Access

The lighthouse on the top of the Yorke Peninsula in the Innes National Park and is easily accessible by road with a short walk to the tower itself.
