Wollongong Breakwater
From the foundation of the town of Wollongong, its harbour has been essential to the progress of the area. Sailing vessels and later the steamships brought in the people and the supplies and took away timber and agricultural products, from livestock to dairy products, wheat, barley and potatoes. When the Osborne Wallsend coal mine was opened at Mt.Keira in 1857, coal became Wollongong’s and Illawarra area’s major export item. Join today and read this facinating story of our history.
