Lighthouses of Australia Inc. is a non-profit
organisation which aims to create a higher profile for Australian lighthouses
within Australia and overseas, and thereby preserve, protect and promote their
place within our history.
The site includes comprehensive lists of lighthouses in each state, with photos, technical data,
history, access details, links to other lighthouse organisations, museums, resources and
other information. |

Not so Solitary Island
When captain Cook journeyed north along the east coast of Australia in 1770, he encountered a group of nine barren, rocky islands lying 430km north of today’s Sydney and, inspired by their standing apart loneliness, he named them Solitary Islands.
Captain Cook did not land on any of the islands and because of their inaccessibility, it is not very likely that a local aboriginal tribe of Gumbaingirr ever made camp on the islands, at least there is no archeological record of that. . Read more... |
